Salzburg self-guided walking tours

Audio walks you take at your own pace, on your own phone. Each one follows a different question through the same city, and several connect: one walk often starts where another ends.

This is a self-guided smartphone experience. No human guide will meet you. Start when you want, pause whenever you like, explore side streets, and go at your own pace.

Which walk is for you?

  • First time in Salzburg, one walk: Salzburg Essentials. The old town in ten stops, about 90 minutes, almost level.
  • Going up to the fortress: Hohensalzburg Fortress. Nine stops inside the walls, about 80 minutes plus museum time. You need a fortress admission ticket.
  • A second walk, across the river: Across the River. The Steingasse, St. Sebastian’s cemetery and the Mirabell gardens, about 90 minutes.
  • An evening walk: Salzburg After Dark. Trials, executioners and plague years on lit streets, about 90 minutes. Carries a content advisory.
  • The 20th century: Salzburg 1938 to 1945. From Sarajevo in 1914 to the years under Hitler, about two hours ten minutes, ending at the main station. Carries a content advisory.

Where each tour starts

Most of our Salzburg walks start in or near the squares around the cathedral, so you can begin right after another walk or a coffee. Tap the map to open it full size.

Putting them together

Salzburg Essentials ends at the Mozartsteg footbridge, and Across the River starts at its other end, so the two make an easy pair. Hohensalzburg Fortress starts at the funicular below the fortress, a short walk from the cathedral. Salzburg After Dark is made for the evening and just as good by day.

Good to know in Salzburg

  • Expect cobblestones in the old town; good shoes help.
  • The Domplatz is partly blocked during the summer festival and the Christmas market.
  • St. Peter’s Cemetery closes at 6 p.m. from October to March and at 8 p.m. from April to September.
  • Building work moves around the city. Each tour page lists what we know about.
