Finding the start
Start at the FestungsBahn funicular valley station, Festungsgasse 4, a short walk from the cathedral. The first track explains both ways up before you choose one.
Terrain and access
- The funicular is the only step-free way up. The footpath is steep, with some steps.
- Step-free at the top: the terrace, the courtyard, the armory, the Kuenburg bastion, and the Marionette Museum (by the bell-tower elevator).
- Not step-free: the Reckturm stairs, about 37 steps on the goods-lift loop, the museum interiors and the princely rooms.
- The fortress has published funicular closures for 9 to 13 November 2026 and 11 January to 14 March 2027. Check its website before you go.
Tickets
You need a fortress admission ticket, bought from the fortress. Every main story works with the standard Basis ticket, and an optional layer covers the princely rooms for All-inclusive ticket holders. This tour does not include admission. See the fortress’s own website for prices and hours.
Keep going
A bonus after the ending follows a prince-archbishop who was held here, and it leads into Salzburg Essentials in the old town below.
Questions about this tour
Is fortress admission included?
No. You buy a fortress ticket from the fortress. Every main story works with the standard Basis ticket, and an optional layer covers the princely rooms for All-inclusive ticket holders.
Can I walk up instead of taking the funicular?
Yes. The footpath is steep and partly gravel, with steps in places, and it is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Allow 20 to 30 minutes. It enters the fortress by a different gate, so from the courtyard follow the signs to the FestungsBahn top station and pick up the tour on the terrace beside it. Play the first stop at the valley station before you set off.
Is it step-free?
The funicular is the only step-free way up. At the top, the terrace is level, and the elevator in the bell tower reaches the courtyard, the armory exhibition, the Kuenburg bastion and the Marionette Museum. The Panorama tour up the Reckturm, the goods-lift loop, the other museum interiors and the princely rooms have stairs.
Are there times the funicular does not run?
The fortress has published funicular closures for November 9 to 13, 2026, when the museums and interiors also close, and January 11 to March 14, 2027. Check its website before you go.
How long does it take?
About 80 minutes, plus any time you spend inside the museums.
